People Can Fly, known for its ambitious gaming projects, recently announced the cancellation of their action-adventure game, Project Dagger. The game had been under development for over three years and was initially set to be released by Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind popular titles like GTA and Borderlands. However, in September 2022, Take-Two withdrew from the partnership, leading People Can Fly to assume full control over the game's development with plans to self-publish.
Despite high hopes for the game's success, People Can Fly suspended the project last November following an external review that recommended a pivotal change in its development direction. A dedicated team of around ten experts was assigned to reshape the project's trajectory. Nevertheless, after months of efforts to redefine the game, People Can Fly disclosed earlier this month that they are discontinuing Project Dagger due to unsatisfactory results in evaluating its scope and commercial viability.
This decision follows another setback with Project Gemini, a collaborative effort between People Can Fly and Square Enix that has also faced challenges. Reports in January suggested significant layoffs due to budget cuts and a narrowing of the project's scope, indicating ongoing strategic reevaluations.
However, not everything is bleak for the developer. People Can Fly is actively working on two self-published titles, known as Project Bifrost and Project Victoria, and Project Maverick, which is funded by Microsoft and rumored to possibly be part of a Gears of War revival, promising an exciting future despite recent project cancellations
