Kathryn Hahn has had a successful career in comedy, yet one of her earlier roles left her son less than impressed. Before gaining widespread recognition in 2021 for her role as Agatha Harkness in Disney+’s WandaVision, she starred in various comedic films. One particular project, however, did not resonate with her child, despite its significance to Hahn.
Hahn has humorously recounted how her son reacted to her performance in the 2008 comedy Step Brothers, directed by Adam McKay, where she played the character Alice Huff. The storyline centers around two adult stepbrothers, Brennan and Dale, who are compelled to share a household after their parents marry. Alice, married to the arrogant Derek, finds herself dissatisfied with her life. When Derek mocks his brothers upon returning home, Dale retaliates by punching him, an act that sparks Alice’s interest in him, leading to an affair.
In the film, Hahn's role isn't the most flattering one. She embodies the archetype of a superficial character who seeks fulfillment through romantic escapades, often appearing fragile and easily swayed by desire. It’s not surprising that her son felt awkward watching this particular film, as she shared in her chat with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
During a house party, her son discovered that Step Brothers was playing in one of the rooms. Feeling uncomfortable, he quickly left the scene, stating that he preferred to depart and watch it. His reaction seems perfectly normal, but Hahn also expressed that her experience on the film enriched her as an artist, allowing her creative expression to flourish. She fondly described the filming process as a wonderfully fun period in her life.
Despite garnering a range of feedback from reviewers, Step Brothers was a commercial success, grossing $128 million against a production budget of $65 million. The show host noted that the film showcased Hahn’s diverse range and capabilities as a performer.
Discussions about a potential sequel to Step Brothers have surfaced over the years. In 2014, director Adam McKay hinted that a sequel was possible, but over time, updates have been few and far between. John C. Reilly mentioned in an interview on Conan that a second installment would only be viable if there was a compelling narrative or a fresh take on the original story.
Creating sequels can be a complex task, especially with a significant gap since the first movie was released. The current cinematic landscape may also pose challenges in terms of marketing a new film. For those interested, Step Brothers is available for streaming on Netflix.
