The journey of the Splinter Cell movie, which was initially tied to the renowned actor Tom Hardy, has reached an unexpected conclusion. Given the history of this project, the news comes as no shock. Originally unveiled in November 2012, the film had captured interest with Hardy, fresh from his performance as Bane in the blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises, set to embody the role of spec ops agent Sam Fisher.
The following year saw the acclaimed Doug Liman, known for directing Edge of Tomorrow, onboard to lead the project. However, since then, the lack of substantial updates left fans and followers unsatisfied. Recently, producer Basil Iwanyk disclosed that the Splinter Cell film is officially no longer in development. During an interview, he reflected on the project, describing it as “one of the ones that got away.” He expressed regret over its unfulfilled potential, stating that it had the makings of an exceptional film.
Despite having numerous iterations and ideas, the film fought to gain its balance regarding script and budget. Iwanyk’s reflections emphasize a significant missed opportunity and underline the disappointment surrounding its cancellation.
In the midst of this setback, there is some positive news related to the Splinter Cell universe. Netflix has introduced the animated series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, featuring Liev Schreiber as Sam Fisher. This development presents a new direction for the franchise, signaling some ongoing interest from creators.
- The animated series is now officially in production.
- A reimagining of the classic Splinter Cell is also in progress, although lacking a specific release date.
As for the gaming segment of the franchise, more than ten years have passed since supporters witnessed any new mainline entries. Nevertheless, the ongoing projects related to Splinter Cell indicate that the brand may still have a future, even if the movie adaptation has faded into the background.
