With the launch of iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, Apple is taking another bold stride into the realm of safety and convenience. In collaboration with AAA, they're providing a cutting-edge feature - Roadside Assistance via satellite. This innovative feature is designed to offer help to iPhone users in case of car emergencies, especially when they're stuck in places with no cellular coverage. Here's a detailed look at this novel function and how you can leverage it.
Activating Roadside Assistance on Your iPhone
In situations where you're stranded without cellular service, Apple has got you covered. To start with, open your Messages app and compose a new message. In the contact field, simply type "Roadside". This will bring up the Roadside Assistance via satellite option. Note that this feature will only work when you're out of wifi or cellular range.
Upon selecting the option, a prompt will appear that lets you specify the kind of car trouble you're facing. This could range from being locked out, running out of fuel or battery, to having a flat tire. In the unlikely scenario that you're unaware of this message feature, there’s a fallback - if you try to call 911 and the call won’t connect, you'll have the option to text emergency services or the roadside assistance provider via satellite.
Compatibility and Availability
Roadside Assistance via satellite is compatible with iPhone models 14 and 15 running on iOS 17 or later versions. Not only that, but this feature is also available to travelers visiting the US. Moreover, satellite connectivity comes free for two years for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 customers, with the initial offer set to expire near the end of 2024. Apple is yet to make an announcement about the pricing model post-expiry of this offer.
AAA and Its Role in Roadside Assistance
AAA, a trusted name for roadside assistance, is providing services for this feature. AAA offers roadside assistance for four-wheeled, motor-driven cars and trucks. While the service is included in AAA membership, non-members can also avail it separately. Interestingly, T-Mobile customers on select plans may even get a year of free AAA membership.
However, it's important to note that while the satellite connectivity might be free, AAA's roadside service will require a payment. The pricing details will be provided before help is dispatched, ensuring transparency and convenience.
This revolutionary feature, combining Apple's technological prowess with AAA’s reliable service, is set to redefine roadside assistance, offering reliable, efficient help when it matters the most.
